Sudoku Rules

Rules In Playing Sudoku Sudoku is a logical game that is frustrating at times but yet you feel itchy to play some more. Its popularity is spreading very fast all over the world. Many people are addicted with this game already. By its challenging and mind bugling puzzles you will not notice that you've been addicted also. If you are one of the few people who have no idea about sudoku here are some basic informations: Sudoku is puzzle in which a grid consisting of several regions is to be filled with numbers so that every row, column, and region contains only one instance of each number. The most common format is a grid of nine rows and columns that are divided into nine smaller regions of three rows and three columns into which the numbers 1 through 9 must be placed. There are 9 rows in a usual Sudoku puzzle. Every row must contain the numbers from 1 – 9. There must be no duplicate numbers in any row. In short, identical rows is a big no.

In the image above , the numbers 5, 9, 3, 7and 8 are the "givens". They can not be changed. The remaining grid that is blank are the portion that you need to fill to complete the row.

Rules In Filling Columns There are 9 columns in a traditional Sudoku puzzle. Like the Sudoku rule for rows, every column must also contain the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. Again, there may not be any duplicaten umbers in any column. Each column will be unique as a result. The image at the left , the numbers 7, 1, 4 and 6 are the "givens". They can not be changed. The remaining grid that is blank is the portion you need to fill to complete the puzzle. Rules In Filling Regions A region is a 3×3 box like the one shown to the left. There are 9 regions in a traditional Sudoku puzzle.

Like the Sudoku requirements for rows and columns, every region must also contain the numbers from 1 – 9. Duplicate numbers are not permitted in any region. Each region will differ from the other regions.

In the images at the right ,  the numbers 1, 2, 5 and 3 are the "givens". They can not be changed. Fill in the remaining numbers as shown in black to complete the region.

Basically the rule is to fill the Sudoku puzzle completelely having the rows , columns and regions containing numbers from 1 – 9 only once. It is very important to follow the rules, it will help you in understanding the ways in playing sudoku.
